Three years ago, I was commissioned by Muriel Quancard and The Dallas Symphony’s SOLUNA International Music & Arts Festival to write music for an installation for the Crow Museum of Asian Art in Dallas. This work, entitled, “WE KNOW YOU’VE GOT SOUL” was inspired by my father and the Sacred Scriptures. It was about the journey of the Soul (Nechama in Hebrew) in a multi-room music and sonic experience that took you from this life and its gravity on Earth, and beyond until the Soul finds Eternal Rest. With its success and the positive feedback we received, I thought last year that I would release the full composition into an album of songs, much like the installation with each title representing a room in the museum with its own music and sounds - from “Before This Life”, “This Life”, “The Passing”, ”Judgements” (bad and good) and the Olam Aba (Eternal Rest). At the end of last December, I released this album discreetly on all platforms without telling anyone. I'm not quite sure why. Today, because of this anniversary, and because of the uncertain times which we live in now, I've decided to let you all know about it. The simple things that we’ve taken for granted are being wiped out by something that measures 0.125 micron. Now, we are reflecting on our relationships with each other, the common good, the planet, and G.od, if you're a believer. This album doesn’t have verses and choruses, and some of the tracks are pretty long. This music could be a way to help you to relax and to breathe. It might also be a good companion to meditation as we reflect upon our purpose and actions in this life and the hereafter, asking ourselves, “what would we change today if we knew that an afterlife exists?”…….what would our priorities be, what are our fears, the importance of money and recognition, how we spend our time, would we be kinder and more patient, would the tone in our voice change, and so on. The music installation in the different rooms of the Crow Museum was also a way to realize these “abstract” concepts of the Soul in a physical way. In the Jewish way of life, a day starts at night when the sun goes down (darkness) and then comes light in the morning. This is why we always believe that light comes after darkness, in this order.
